I started singing when I was 25. I was living in Paris at the time to pursue theatre and was acting in some small stage productions with a British ensemble. I worked as an au-pair for a family with 3 teenagers. They were a nice family and because my job consisted of mainly preparing meals, light cleaning & speaking english, I had plenty of time to wander and roam to discover Paris.
A friend & I met these 2 guys in a bar one night who invited us to a party over the weekend. It was there that I met a fantastic group of people from all over the world; Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and the US. We were a group of architects, photographers, actors/directors and soul searchers. It was there I met the one and only Scott Dimmit.
Scott was an architect from Chicago who taught me what music was truly about which is spirit. Since I had only learned music from this perspective, I believed there was never a right or wrong way to “do”music. I found this incredibly liberating and will be forever grateful for Scott’s gracious wisdom.
We’d go to parties and he’d introduce me as “la chanteuse”. We’d sing old Neil Young, Leonard Cohen & improv songs for hours in his flat while he’d tape us on his 4-track. He’d encourage everyone he knew to sing and share their voice with us. I never heard him say a negative or judgmental word about anyone’s voice - he was/is one of those people who can hear the beauty in everyone...
His support was so consistent and strong that it prompted me to go see how I would fare outside of our bohemian party life. I found myself getting recording projects surprisingly easily. Gradually, from having sung so much for other people, I started to hear words, poetry and eventually lyrics of my own.
Two friends, Aryeh & Julie were out of town and let me stay in their apt while I was waiting to move into my next place. They had a nylon string guitar & an old church songbook. I stared looking up chords and the week I stayed there I wrote my first song, “Miner’s Son”.
At one of our infamous parties, I met someone else very pivotal in my career, Marc Collin. Marc came to a birthday party at my apt one evening and asked me to play him a song on the guitar. I showed him “Miner’s Son” and he offered to produce it.
From there our 2 eps ensued and through our demo sessions with producer Etienne Wersinger I was contacted by Nicolas Godin of “Air”. I had no idea what the “French Touch” was and the impact ‘Moon Safari’ and “All I Need” would soon have on the international music scene. But, what I was recognizing & appreciating was how naturally each opportunity unfolded, one after the other.
Two days after I signed with Polygram Publishing (thanks to Marc), I was asked to sing on Wasis Diop’s song, “Repondeur”. I eventually co-wrote the track in english, (renaming it “Everything”) and we sang it as a duet. It was licensed for “The Thomas Crowne Affair” the following year as I was making my first solo album. The song is synched to the love scene on the staircase w/ Pierce Brosnan & Rene Russo. Very nice !
I’d signed with Vitalsong before heading to England to make what I considered an aptly titled, “Early Days”. It was a singer-songwriter inspired folk album inciting the countless hours of listening to Joni Mitchell, Ricki Lee Jones, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Steely Dan & Todd Rundgren to influence and filter through my own expressions.
From there, I did another solo album (a bit darker & electronic) called “Titles & Idols” as well as several collaborations including: “One Fine Day” w/Jakatta, “Laguna” w/D*Note, “Arrival” & the album “All Is Pale” w/Pale 3 and most recently a track called, “Under My Star” with a young Hungarian instrumental electronic group named GELKA that will be featured on next summer’s Cafe Del Mar compilation.
Now, there is WHOLEHEATRED. It has taken 4 years to write, record and produce this cd and I am proud of what Jez, Phillippe, Pascal & all the musicians & I have made together.
And when I look back to the years in Paris on the Seine with Anke, Scott, Kees, Elizabeth, Jill, Andreas, Aryeh, Julie, Michael, Ludovic, Michel, Nathalie, Jocelyn, Todd, Kevin & Jay Michael, they can know I think of them and our times together with smiling memories.
